Mercan and 160 Golden Visa Recipients Join Forces in €56-Million Investment in New Hotel in Porto

The Renaissance Park Hotel - Porto will have an impressive architectural design, a new urban park and enviable views over the city.

The hotel is one of the Mercan Group’s most recent investments in partnership with the RA Group (Reference Arrojada Group). Under the Renaissance brand, which belongs to Marriott International, the building will be located in one of Porto’s most historic districts, with stunning views over the city.

In a €56-million investment, the Renaissance Park Hotel – Porto is expected to have an area of around 14,000 square metres, 163 rooms, an outdoor panoramic pool on the top floor with a bar and esplanade, a 250-seat restaurant and a congress centre with the capacity for up to 600 people.

The hotel is close to public transport and just a 10-minute walk from Porto City Hall, the Clérigos Tower and some of the city’s best-known restaurants and historic buildings. The building is located near the Lapa church in the parish of the same name.

Jordi Vilanova, vice-president of the Mercan Group, stated that “We believe in tourism’s potential in Portugal and we are convinced that the country has all the conditions that justify our investment in this sector so badly affected by the pandemic. These are reasons that lead us not only to maintain but also to reinforce our positioning in Portugal, even in the face of the current economic situation and almost in a counter-cycle. The hotel projects we want to develop in various parts of the country have a relevant weight in job creation, both in the development and construction phases, as well as in the future hotel management, which will be long-term.”

Renaissance Park Hotel – Porto was designed by Visioarq Arquitectos, with the interiors planned by Broadway Maylan studio. It will stand out for its simple and elegant forms developed in conjunction with the top engineering firm JFA Engenharia, tailored for the surrounding city landscape.

“This project is an example of the beneficial application of foreign investment via golden visas, with 160 international investors. In addition to contributing to job creation and boosting tourism in the region, this project will also yield 17,700m² to the city, of which 14,600m² are destined for the construction of the Lapa Urban Park that residents and visitors to Porto can enjoy,” Jordi Vilanova, Vice-President of the Mercan Group added.

The first stone was laid on May 19, in the presence of the vice-president of the Porto City Hall, Filipe Araújo. The act symbolically marked the beginning of construction, which will start shortly and last 18 months, executed by the construction company Cobelba S.A.. The future Renaissance Park Hotel – Porto will have Leed Gold certification, recognising the project’s excellent energy and environmental performance.

The start of construction of the Renaissance Park Hotel – Porto comes months after the start of work on the new Four Points by Sheraton in Matosinhos. A 20-million-euro investment by the Mercan Group, which should be completed by the end of this year. This was the first project with the seal of the Marriott International chain in Matosinhos.
