Senior Citizens’ Residence in Braga Target of €12-Million Investment

3 February 2021

The Braga City Council has approved the project for a new senior citizens’ residence, located near the city’s historic centre, after receiving a favourable opinion from the Northern Cultural Regional Directorate. Construction is forecast to conclude in 2022.

The €12-million investment will fund the construction of three buildings, one new. The existing facilities include two houses designed by the biggest name in Portuguese architecture of the first half of the 20th century, Moura Coutinho.

Rita Martins, the author of a master’s dissertation on Moura Coutinho, acknowledged in statements to the public that she did not know if it was possible to “at least maintain the façades” of the demolished houses while stating that she is against the “complete destruction” of buildings that “mark a complex period from the social and economic point of view.”
