Overnight Stays in the Alentejo and Madeira Above October 2019 Levels

In October, Portuguese travellers accounted for two million overnight stays, an increase of 65.4%.

According to data on tourism published today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), overnight stays in the Alentejo and the Autonomous Region of Madeira were above the levels seen in October 2019.

The tourist accommodation sector hosted 2.1 million guests and 5.5 million overnight stays in October 2021, up 115.5% and 139.0%, respectively (vs +52.3% and +58.5% in September). Nationally, however, visits in October 2021 were lower than those in October 2019, with the number of guests and overnight stays decreasing by 14.6% and 13.5%, respectively.

Portuguese resident travellers in October accounted for two million overnight stays, up 65.4%, above the same period in 2019 (+28.2%). According to INE’s analysis, there were 3.5 million non-resident overnight stays, the highest since October 2019, tripling compared to October 2020 (+216.6%), while still down by 26.7% compared to October 2019.

The INE highlighted the growth in Alentejo (+14.9%) and the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+3.9%), while the remaining regions recorded decreases.

In the first ten months of 2021, overnight stays increased by 31.0% (+31.9% for residents and +30% for non-residents). Compared to the same period in 2019, overnight stays decreased by 49.9% (-11.0% for residents and -66.3% for non-residents). In October, 24.2% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or had no guests (20.5% in September).
