Construction Output Up 8.1% in May

Employment and remuneration rose by 2.9% and 13.0% year-on-year.

The figures stem from the Production, Employment and Wages in Construction indices released today by the National Statistics Institute. According to the INE, Construction Output accelerated to 8.1% in May this year, 4.6 percentage points higher than in April. Even so, it was 0.9% lower than in May 2019. Employment and remuneration showed year-on-year changes of 2.9% and 13.0% (changes of 3.1% and 15.0% in the previous month).

According to the National Statistics Institute, the construction output index accelerated by 4.6 percentage points to 8.1% growth in May. The increase largely reflects a base effect, as the same month, last year came amid the pandemic, as the index fell by 8.3%.

Building Construction grew by 5.3% (1.5% in April), while Civil Engineering accelerated by 5.7 percentage points to 12.3%.

For employment and remuneration, the indices showed year-on-year changes of 2.9% and 13.0%, respectively, in May (changes of 3.1 and 15.0% in the previous month). That result was also influenced by the base effect, especially in the second case. In May 2020, there were year-on-year decreases of 2.1% and 6%, in the same order. Compared to April, these indexes increased by 0.4% and 3.4%, respectively (0.5% and 5.3% in May 2020).
